Simply Stumps are tree stump grinding/removal specialists, meaning we are dedicated to offering this service only. Unlike other companies such as tree surgeons and landscapers, who may also offer stump removal as just one of their services, we at Simply Stumps have become specialist experts in this service only. For this reason we have invested in only the best stump grinding equipment available on the market, are fully trained and highly experienced, we know our machinery inside and out and carry the necessary parts to get it back up and running in the event of any breakdowns on site. Also for the peace of mind of our customers we are fully insured with Aviva Insurance, with public liability up to 5 million.
We understand the importance on keeping in contact with our customers, meaning our mobile phone line is manned by the owner Scott at all times. If your call is missed for any reason then we will call you straight back as soon as we see your message or missed call. Humble Beginnings... Where it all started.
Hi, I’m Scott Howfield, the owner of Simply Stumps. I founded Simply Stumps back in 2002, and it has been a successful venture ever since. I started my career in the Arboriculture industry after attending a Woodland Conservation course at the Berkshire College of Agriculture. During the course, I discovered my passion for trees and began pursuing a career in this exciting industry. I signed up for the City and Guilds in Tree Surgery for Craftsman course at Merrist Wood College in Guildford, where I received practical training along with science based theory in the classroom, being taught by some of the leading experts in the industry such as the infamous Jack Kenyon. I passed the course with distinction, obtaining all the necessary NPTC certificates, which enabled me to quickly gain employment in the Arboriculture industry.
After working for a large tree surgery company in Henley-on-Thames, Berkshire, and having the opportunity to work in the gardens of some of the rich and famous, including a certain member of The Beatles, I decided to start my own tree surgery business. This venture allowed me to gain experience running a small business and to advance my Arboricultural skills. In 2000, I was offered a position at the newly constructed Eden Project in Cornwall, where I gained a fuller understanding of plant science, plant pests, and diseases. I also had the experience of working at one of the most amazing constructions and iconic landmarks in the country and being part of conveying its message of hope for a more sustainable future.
In 2002, I moved back to Buckinghamshire with the idea and intent of starting a new company, this time specializing in a neglected part of the Arboricultural industry, Tree Stump Grinding. I coined the name Simply Stumps after brainstorming for names with my father over a cup of tea, we both liked the name as it is directly to the point, simple and easy to remember. I purchased my first stump grinding machine after obtaining a small loan from the bank. I advertised in the right areas and devoted time and care into customer service and attention to detail in my work. Opportunities started to appear, and before long, I found myself removing tree stumps not only for domestic clients, but also for commercial companies such as landscapers, builders, tree surgeons as well as local councils.With more investment over the following years into hydraulic stump grinding machinery and vehicles, Simply Stumps quickly grew to be one of the most renowned stump grinding companies in the South East and Home Counties.
In 2012 received a call from the highly regarded Which? Magazine, asking if I, as an expert in the field, would assist in an article they wanted to write for their readers about tree stump grinding. Following a day spent with one of their writers and a photographer, the article appeared in the nationwide Which Gardening magazine and also on their consumer website. This helped greatly with the reputation and credibility of Simply Stumps and led to more interest in the services we provide. The article can still be read on the Which? website here.
Today, my team and I at Simply Stumps aim tirelessly to provide the high level of quality and professionalism that our customers have come to expect, which first allowed our business to thrive.
