Why Should you Remove Tree Stumps?
Tree stumps can be more than just an eyesore in the garden, they can be a dangerous trip hazard, harbour pests and diseases such as Honey Fungus, or they may just be in the way of your next plan for the garden.
There are many reasons to remove a tree stump which include:
- Making way for new plants, trees, landscaping projects or garden buildings.
- Reducing the risks of honey fungus using the stump as a food source and spreading to other trees and shrubs in the garden.
- Making the lawn easier to mow and avoiding accidental damage to your expensive lawn mower.
- Old tree stumps can be an unsightly feature of an otherwise tidy garden.
- A large stump left in close proximity to buildings can put off potential buyers or lower the value of your property due to concerns over cost of future removal.
- Many species of trees will have no problem in regrowing again from the stump. Stump grinding prevents this from happening.
Can you grind any size tree stump?
Using our various size stump grinding machines we can grind any size of stump. From small persistent ivy stumps and shrub stumps, right up to huge uprooted stumps from mature trees. In over 20 years that we have been established, we have not found a stump which could not be ground due to its size only.
We have very limited access for machinery, can you still remove the stump?
If you have limited access to the garden then this isn’t usually a problem. Our Predator stump grinders are only 70cm in width, easily gaining access through most garden gates. We also have special handheld stump grinding machines that have no limits to where they can gain access, and can be easily carried through a house for those hard to get to limited access stumps!
How do stump grinding machines work?
Stump grinding machines work by powering a high speed spinning metal disc containing special tungsten carbide cutting teeth. The disc is swept across the stump, cutting it into woodchip with each pass as it goes. The teeth are strong enough to withstand cutting through the soil and small stones in the earth, allowing the tree stump and the major roots to be ground down to at least 300mm below the ground level in most cases. This process entirely kills off the stump preventing any regrowth and allowing you to instantly replant, re-turf or redevelop the area.
What happens to the remains of the stump?
The resulting woodchip remains behind onsite in neat piles in the position of the stump. This not only fills in the created hole but also prevents a potentially dangerous trip hazard being left behind. The woodchip makes a good mulch to use around the flower beds or on the compost heap to make a soil improver. It is 100 percent recyclable, thus avoiding any necessary disposal and associated costs involved at landfill, so you can save money whilst also doing your bit for the environment!

Although a large percentage of our work is in private domestic gardens, we also carry out stump grinding work for Tree Surgeons, Landscapers, Gardeners, Builders, Manor Houses and Estates, Golf Courses, Local Councils, Schools and Commercial properties.
